The Magic of Hangul

schedule 4 min read

Linguists around the world often refer to the Korean alphabet, Hangul (한글), as the most logical and scientific writing system ever invented. But what makes it so special?

Invented for the People

Before the 15th century, Koreans wrote using complex Chinese characters. Because these were incredibly difficult to learn, reading and writing were privileges reserved only for the elite scholars and aristocrats.

King Sejong the Great, one of Korea's most beloved historical figures, felt compassion for the common people who could not read. In 1443, he personally created a completely new, incredibly intuitive alphabet so simple that "a wise man can acquaint himself with them before the morning is over; a stupid man can learn them in the space of ten days."

The Science Behind the Shapes

Unlike the English alphabet, which evolved randomly over thousands of years, the shapes of Hangul consonants are actually diagrams of the human mouth!

For example, the letter 'ㄱ' (g/k) is shaped like the root of the tongue blocking the throat. The letter 'ㅁ' (m) is shaped like closed lips. By simply looking at the shape of the letter, your mouth subconsciously knows how to position itself to make the sound.

Building Blocks of Sound

Hangul isn't written sequentially like English (H-E-L-L-O). Instead, letters are grouped into syllabic blocks. For instance, 'ㅎ' (h), 'ㅏ' (a), and 'ㄴ' (n) combine to form a single block: 한 (Han). This makes reading incredibly fast and visually organized.

Writing Your Name in Hangul

Because Hangul is a phonetic alphabet (representing sounds rather than meanings), almost any sound in the world can be written in Hangul. Whether your name is Sarah (사라), David (데이비드), or Chloe (클로이), it can be perfectly captured in this beautiful script.
